“Writing for Wellbeing” is a practice based on the principle that writing can make you happier and healthier. Often, this works by allowing you to express emotions or experiences that have previously been ‘bottled up’. Writing things down can also help you to see them more clearly, or approach problems in new ways. It is a safe, inexpensive way of helping yourself, that can be done almost anywhere, at almost any time.
Anyone can take part in writing for wellbeing – spelling, handwriting and punctuation aren’t important here. You don’t have to be a writer to write – the facilitator’s job is to lead you through the process, no matter what previous experience you have.
Writing for Wellbeing workshops
Writing for Wellbeing workshops are usually done in small groups (6-8 people), in a quiet, comfortable environment. The facilitator will use a variety of prompts to get you started—these might be existing poems, objects or even a piece of music. You will be given time to write within the group, and there will be a chance to share your work if you wish, but you can also choose to keep it private. Workshops usually lasts two hours, with a break for tea/coffee in between.
Workshops can be adapted for almost any group – school pupils, office teams, support groups and community organisations can all benefit from writing together. If you are interested in hosting a workshop, please get in touch.
Individual Writing for Wellbeing
Writing for Wellbeing doesn’t have to take place in a group – if you prefer, you can meet with a facilitator for a 1:1 writing session. This is often a good option for those who find it physically difficult to write, as the sessions can take place in the form of a conversation, which the facilitator would then transcribe into poetic form.
